newlyn art gallery

These are pics of a specially commissioned installation at the Newlyn Gallery at the moment by Phoebe Cummings (recently artist in residence at the V&A) in response to the Cornish landscape.

People (myself included) tend to bang on about the colours of Cornwall, don’t they, so there was something interesting and different in her intricate, clay-grey mini Cornwall.

I attended a workshop on Saturday morning with Phoebe, in which she taught us a few tricks and asked us to mould our piece of clay into a little piece of Cornwall: in the group, there were celtic crosses, palm trees, Cornish hedges, and Men an Tol.

I started on a standing stone but quickly realised that that, er, wasn’t going to work as, being a profound beginner, it was looking like something else entirely.
